We get this question almost every day at the store, usually from someone trying to make a budget stretch without feeling like they settled. It is a good question, and it deserves a straight answer instead of a sales pitch. So here is how we talk it through with our own customers.
Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?
Yes. A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond. It has the same carbon structure, the same hardness, the same sparkle, and the same optical properties as a diamond pulled from the earth. Side by side, you cannot tell the difference with your eye, and neither can we without specialized equipment. Both natural and lab-grown diamonds can be independently graded and certified, so you know exactly what you are getting.
So what is the actual difference?
The difference is how they were made. A natural diamond formed deep in the earth over a very long time. A lab-grown diamond was created in a controlled setting over a matter of weeks using the same conditions of heat and pressure. Same result, different origin.
The part most people care about is what that means for the price. Because lab-grown diamonds cost less to produce, the same budget usually buys a noticeably larger or higher-quality stone. If your goal is the most size and sparkle for your dollar, lab-grown is hard to beat.
Is one a better value than the other?
This is where we like to be honest rather than push you one way. Natural diamonds have historically held their value better over time and carry the story of being a rare, billions-of-years-old stone. Lab-grown diamonds give you more look for your budget today, but they do not hold resale value the same way. Neither answer is wrong. It depends on whether you care more about the long-term keepsake or getting the biggest beautiful stone you can right now.
Are lab-grown diamonds more ethical?
Both can be responsible choices. Every diamond we carry, natural or lab-grown, is conflict free. If sourcing is important to you, tell us, and we will walk you through the options.
Which one should you choose?
Honestly, the right answer is the one that fits your priorities and your budget, not ours. That is the whole point of sitting down with a real jeweler. Jay, our owner, is a GIA Graduate Gemologist, and he will put a natural and a lab-grown stone in front of you, explain the trade-offs in plain language, and let you decide with no pressure. Plenty of our customers come in sure they want one and leave happy with the other.
If you want to compare a few stones in person, stop by the store on West Owen K. Garriott Road in Enid or make an appointment online and we will set aside time for you. We have been helping northwest Oklahoma families pick the right diamond since 1968, and we would be glad to help with yours.
